GolfBuddy VS4 Q&A:

What’s the battery difference between the VS4 and the original Voice?

The VS4 is the newest golf GPS rangefinder to GolfBuddy’s voice line. Although it may not seem like there are any significant changes, there are.

When it comes to the battery category, it has one extra hour of battery life, bringing it up to a total of 10 hours of operation life. Secondly and most importantly, the battery is replaceable.

When the battery goes out for good on the Voice GPS, you’re kinda out of luck and in back in the market for a new one. With the VS4, you can buy a new battery to replace it and keep on trekking with it for as long as you want.

Does the VS4 readout the distances to the front and back of the green too?

This golf GPS rangefinder is capable of vocalizing all the distances. Most people prefer to have the center of the green as the default setting.

But for audio distances, push the button once and she’ll give you the distance to the hole. Push the button again and hold down for approximately three seconds and she’ll verbally give the distances to the front and the back of the green.

To get all the distances in one go requires just a quick look at the device to see all the distances displayed at the same time.

How do you know when it’s fully charged?

This unit has a very convenient way of letting you know that it’s charging. Thinking your device is charging up for your next game and walking away from it when you didn’t quite connect it all the way can leave you pretty disappointed when it’s time to hit the green.

If the VS4 is on while you charge it, a battery charging icon will appear. If it’s off and you’re charging it, the screen will continuously flash. When the GPS is fully charged, the battery icon will stop charging or the flashing will cease.

Can the screen flip upside down so I can look at it from my belt?

This device has a screen rotation setting that allows you to view the display “upside down” if you’ve got it attached to your belt. It’s extremely convenient in case you like to look at your screen without detaching the entire device. It’s even more convenient now that the distances to the front, center, and back of the green are all simultaneously displayed on the screen.

No more tediously pulling off the rangefinder then reattaching it to the belt, and no more scrolling through multiple screens for yardage info. It can’t be simpler than that. Press, listen, and look down.

Can a request be made to add a new course to the database?

With over 38,000 courses available worldwide, there’s likely very little chance that the VS4 won’t have your course in its system already. But, for the rare chance that it might not have it or if it needs to be updated, you can have that course uploaded or updated.

You do need to go online to their course database and select the Request Course Map option and follow the online prompts from there.

Are the buttons easy to depress?

The buttons on this device are easy to use and easy to press. The side buttons are small in size and the two on the left side of the unit, the power button and P button, are textured somewhat for easy button identification and positive engagement.

The volume control buttons other side are barely textured at all. There have been some complaints that because they’re so small and untextured, that you’re not quite sure if you’ve engaged them at all.

Our Verdict on the VS4

To ping up the strokes, the GolfBuddy VS4 is your touchless and audio friend. It can be worn as a watch or a clip-on unit. Unlike the Voice, the battery can be replaced on this unit making it irreplaceable.

The GolfBuddy Voice is another cheap and fantastic GPS golf rangefinder. It’s simple and easy to use. However, with all GPS devices, you’ve got to have the weather on your side. Don’t be a fool and blame performance issues for the thunder clouds above.

Looking outside of Golf Buddy is the Garmin Approach S4 Golf Watch. Since the VS4 is wearable as a watch, you might just want to head straight for the Garmin. It does cost a little more, but it also offers Bluetooth connectivity, high resolution, and 1ATM waterproofness.

But, if Golf Buddy sounds like a brand that can be your best pal, stay with the crowd – a nice, warm, and welcoming crowd of buddies!
