Approach S4 GPS Golf Watch Q&A:

Can this GPS golf watch be used as a regular watch?

The S4 is stylish and small enough to not only functionally and fashionably serve you while on the green, but it can also double as a regular watch.

In watch mode, it can last as long as six weeks without needing to be recharged. But, from all the features it has like an odometer, pace play timer, and much more, you and I both know that it’s no ordinary ticker.

Can I keep track of my scores with the Approach watch?

Yes, the S4 golf watch does have a built-in digital score card for you to track and upload to the pc for review and comparison. You do have a couple of scoring card options; you can choose between the Stableford score card or the Stroke Play score card.

Do I have to dig around the menu to find the Green View?

An advantageous feature of this device is the dedicated Green View button is has right there on the watch. By pressing it, you’ll be taken immediately to the Green View where you can get a true and instant shape of the course from your angle of approach.

Does this golf GPS have Bluetooth connectivity?

Yes, the S4 does have Bluetooth connectivity to enable you to pair your smartphone with the watch so that you can get Smart Notifications.

What are Smart Notifications? I’m glad you asked. Your Garmin GPS watch will notify you and display any texts, calls, emails, calendar alerts, you name it, while you’re on the course.

This way you can take home or work with you while you’re on sacred ground at the course. Wait, who said this was a good idea? Oh yeah, it was the boss or your wife who excitedly said you should get this watch because it meant you’d never miss a call from them again.

Now you definitely can’t say you never got that work email or the message to pick up lemons on the way home. All kidding aside, it’s a brilliant feature that allows you to stay connected no matter where you are. You do have to have a compatible Apple iPhone to take advantage of this convenient feature.

Is the watch waterproof?

This golf rangefinder watch is water-resistant to 1 ATM. If you’re wondering, an ATM represents static water pressure, and one ATM is equivalent to 10 meters, 10 yards, or 30 feet. With water specs like this, it’s going to withstand a sun shower or two while on the green.

Are there color options available with the S4?

The Approach S4 comes in three different color schemes. There’s white, black, and blue/black available. Although the black watch is marketed as the black version, it does have neon green color tones in the exact same place the blue/black version has the blue tones on it.

So, perhaps it should be marketed as neon green/black, rather than just black. But, maybe highlighting this misnomer is just being petty.

What distances does the watch give?

The Approach S4 does have a variety of distance features to offer. It can give distances to the front, middle, and back of the green as well as the distances to doglegs and layups.

Unlike the newer S6, it doesn’t provide any distances to any hazards. There is a way around this though. With the S4, you can input some custom landmark distances.

If you wanted to, you could set these for your bunkers, trees, etc. But, if you didn’t want to take the time to input that info, it could be a bit of a disappointment that you don’t get preloaded distances to hazards.

Our Verdict on the Garmin S4

To ping up the strokes, the Garmin Approach S4 really sets the standard for golf watches in the industry. It’s sunlight readable, easy to use, and has a dedicated Green View button.

The Garmin Approach S6 is just as awesome as the S4, but it includes some really neat features to help you improve your stroke. It has Swing Tempo, Tempo Training, and Swing Strength apps, just to name a few.

It’s hard to find another watch that compares in every way to the Garmin watches. But, if it’s out of your price range, you might want to consider the basic GolfBuddy WT5 watch that will do everything you could want. Plus, it’s much more affordable!

Garmin knows GPS and technology. If you want first-class products, this is a first-class brand. Don’t tee anywhere else without Garmin!
